Oregon State Police (OSP) and the Linn County Medical Examiner's Office are investigating the death of an 80-year old California man found deceased in his sport utility vehicle off southbound Interstate 5 near Coburg. Investigators are looking into if the death was related to a medical problem while the man was driving. The man's name is being released after Los Angles County, California Sheriff's Office notified next of kin.
On July 29, 2009 at approximately 4:15 a.m. a call was received that a sport utility vehicle was about 12 feet off the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near milepost 205 with a man slumped over onto the passenger's seat. Coburg Fire Department personnel, OSP and ODOT responded to the scene where it was confirmed the man, identified as JAMES HOGGAN, age 80, from Wrightwood, California was deceased in the vehicle that had driven off the freeway shoulder and struck a concrete culvert.
HOGGAN was not visible to passing traffic and his injuries were described as minor.
OSP troopers from the Springfield Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
