One member of a Nampa, Idaho family died and three others were seriously injured Sunday afternoon in a single vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 84 east of La Grande.
According to Oregon State Police Trooper Marcus McDowell, on August 2, 2009 at approximately 2:16 p.m. a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by JENS EUGENE JENSEN, age 53, was eastbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 261 when it drifted onto the right gravel shoulder and struck a highway marker. The Ford Explorer then came back across both eastbound lanes into the center median where it rolled and came to rest. Three passengers were ejected from the vehicle.
Right front passenger KAREN KRISTINE JENSEN, age 51, died as a result of the crash.
Rear passengers NOAH JENSEN, age 20, and ELIJAH JENSEN, age 19, along with driver JENS JENSEN were seriously injured. All three were flown by air ambulance to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho for treatment.
OSP troopers from the La Grande Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Driver fatigue is a possible contributing factor.
Safety restraint use by all four occupants is still to be determined.
OSP troopers were assisted at the scene by La Grande EMS/Fire, Union County Sheriff's Office, La Grande Police Department, and ODOT.
