Fatal Bicycle-Involved Traffic Crash - Highway 101 north of Garibaldi

An 81-year old Vancouver, Washington man died Thursday morning when the bicycle he was riding collided with a loaded log trailer along Highway 101 north of Garibaldi. The victim, who was described as an experienced cyclist, was riding with is 47-year old son at the time of the crash.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Greg Plummer, on August 4, 2011 at approximately 11:50 a.m. a 1994 Peterbilt truck pulling a loaded log pole trailer driven by MICHAEL J. HALL, age 65, from Bay City, was southbound on Highway 101 near milepost 54 approaching two men on bicycles also traveling southbound.
For an unknown reason, the lead bicycle ridden by DALE DELANE BEACOCK, age 81, swerved in to the southbound lane and collided with the rear of the pole trailer as it was traveling past both bicycles. The victim's son was several yards behind him at the time of the incident.
DALE BEACOCK was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was wearing a bicycle safety helmet.

HALL was not injured.

OSP troopers from the Tillamook work site are continuing the investigation. Assisting OSP were Tillamook County Sheriff's Office, Garibaldi Fire and Rescue, Garibaldi Ambulance, Rockaway Police Department and ODOT. A Collision Reconstructionist from the OSP Newport Area Command Office responded to the scene and assisted with the investigation.
The highway was partially blocked for approximately four and one half hours.
