Double Fatal Traffic Crash - Highway 101 south of Bandon

Two people died and two others were injured Friday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 101 south of Bandon.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Trooper Dave Timm, on August 8, 2008 at approximately 3:35 p.m. a 2005 Toyota Tacoma pickup driven by PETE BIONDA, age 65, from Bandon, was southbound on Highway 101 near milepost 279 when an approaching northbound 2007 Ford Focus driven by DANA JACOBO, age 45, from Bandon, lost control. The Ford Focus drove onto the northbound shoulder, slid sideways and crossed into the southbound lane where it collided with the Toyota.
JACOBO was declared deceased at the scene of the crash.
BIONDA was transported to Bay Area Hospital with critical injuries and died later in the evening from those injuries.
Two passengers in the Toyota identified as MELANIE SWAIM, age 38, and MADISON SWAIM, age 10, both from Bandon, were transported to Bay Area Hospital where they were treated and released with non-life threatening injuries.
All occupants of both vehicles were using safety restraints.
Both lanes were blocked for approximately two hours.
The Oregon State Police was assisted by members of the Coos County Crash Team, Coos County Sheriff's Office, Bandon Fire Department, Coos County Medical Examiner, Oregon Department of Transportation, Bandon Police Department, Coos Bay Police Department, and Mast Brothers Towing.
