Fatal Vehicle / Pedestrian Crash - Highway 224 near Eagle Creek

A 21-year old Sandy man died Saturday night while walking along Highway 224 about one mile west of Eagle Creek when he walked into the traffic lane and was struck by a van.
On August 9, 2008 at approximately 8:55 p.m. JONATHAN MICHAEL LYBARGER, age 21, from Sandy, was walking on the eastbound shoulder of Highway 224 near SE Paul Bunyan Lane with his wife and two other people when he reportedly stepped into the eastbound lane and was struck by an eastbound 1996 Dodge Caravan driven by DEBRA LEE THOMAS, age 52, from Estacada.
LYBARGER was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other three people walking with him were not struck.
THOMAS was using safety restraints and was not injured.
Oregon State Police troopers from the Portland Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Alcohol is a possible contributing factor on part of the victim.
Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Boring Fire Department, and ODOT assisted at the scene. Highway 224 was closed about 3 1/2 hours during the investigation.
