Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Monday's quadruple fatal traffic crash on Highway 30 west of Clatskanie that resulted in the deaths of four Ridgefield, Washington teenagers and critical injury to a fifth teenager. An investigation update is provided with this release.
An OSP collision reconstructionist confirmed that the three 18-year old male passengers seated in the rear seat of the 1999 Isuzu Rodeo sport utility vehicle identified as JASON CARY CARTER, RICHARD MICHAEL ARAIZA, and DUSTIN EVAN LEITZELL, were not using safety restraints. CARTER and ARAIZA were pronounced deceased at the scene. LEITZELL was transported by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital where he is now listed in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
The Isuzu's operator, AJA L. GERRITY, age 17, and right front passenger AMANDA WILLIAMS, age 18, were both using safety restraints and the vehicle's front airbags deployed. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Isuzu sport utility vehicle was following at least one other vehicle occupied by their friends' enroute to the Oregon coast. The lead vehicle passed a pickup pulling a boat. The Isuzu was then passing the pickup and boat when it moved back into the westbound lane of Highway 30 near milepost 63 due to approaching oncoming traffic. After returning into the westbound lane, GERRITY lost control of the Isuzu and slid broadside into the eastbound lane where it was struck in the passenger side by an eastbound 2001 Chevrolet Express van driven by KI YOUNG KIM, age 55, from Vancouver, Washington.
KIM is reported in satisfactory condition at St. John's Medical Center in Longview, Washington.
No additional information to be released pending the completion of the investigation.
