Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Sunday morning's fatal traffic crash on Highway 126 west of Walton that resulted in the death of a Florence-area woman and injuries to four others.
On August 16, 2009 at approximately 9:50 a.m. a passenger car driven by SARAH ELIZABETH DAIN, age 58, from Florence, was westbound on Highway 126 near milepost 30 when, for an unknown reason, it crossed the center line and sideswiped an eastbound 2007 Dodge pickup with five occupants. After colliding with the pickup, the car continued into the eastbound lane and crashed head-on with an eastbound 2003 Dodge Durango driven by MICHAEL W. HUBER, age 42, from Veneta.
DAIN was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was using safety restraints and the car's airbags deployed.
HUBER and his wife, CAROLYN, age 48, and their two boys, age 7 and 2, were transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend with non-life threatening injuries.
The Dodge pickup's driver, CRAIG Q. WATKINS, age 44, from Twin Falls, Idaho and two other adults and two children were not injured.
OSP troopers from the Springfield and Florence offices are continuing the investigation.
Lane County Fire District, Eugene Fire & Rescue, and ODOT assisted at the scene. ODOT had a detour established during the near 6 hour highway closure.
