Snake River Correctional Institution (SRCI) was placed on modified operations status late, Aug. 18, following a three-inmate fight and ensuing use-of-force incident to end the fight. Today, all areas of the institution are running under normal operations, except for Complex Two, where the incident occurred. Visiting for the entire facility, including Complex Two, will run on a normal schedule.

The institution's operations were modified, after a two-on-one inmate assault, which occurred on the Complex Two recreation yard Thursday, at approximately 8:15 p.m. Security staff observed the assault. The inmates refused to end their fight upon verbal orders from staff to stop. The assault ended after a security staff member fired a shot, striking one inmate.

Inmates involved in the altercation received medical attention for their injuries; one inmate was transported off-site for medical care.

In accordance with standard operating procedures, the Oregon State Police Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the incident, and an internal department review is also underway. The names of the involved staff member and inmates are being withheld at this time.

Modified operations will continue until further notice, with inmates in Complex Two being restricted to their cells. Although the Complex Two inmates will have visiting as normal, they will not have access to their unit phones. Updates will be available regarding institution operations via the SRCI Information Line at 541-881-INFO (4636).
