Oregon State Police (OSP) are continuing the investigation into an early Sunday morning single vehicle fatal traffic crash on Highway 730 about eleven miles east of Hermiston that resulted in the death of one person, serious injuries to another, and the arrest of the vehicle's driver on multiple charges.

According to OSP Trooper Jarred Little, on August 21, 2011 at 7:04 a.m. troopers were dispatched to a reported traffic crash on Highway 730 near milepost 196. Upon arrival, emergency responders found an overturned car about 30 yards off the highway. One person was pronounced deceased at the scene and a second was seriously injured. The driver had minor injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates during the early morning hours a 1997 Pontiac Gran Prix four-door driven by ACOSTA GONZALO, age 32, from Entiat, Washington was negotiating a left curve when it traveled onto the right shoulder, over-corrected and rolled numerous times before coming to rest on its top.

Right rear passenger JOSE E. RAMIREZ CHAVARRIA, age 23, from Entiat, Washington was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Front right passenger MARTIN RAMIREZ, age 28, from Entiat, Washington was transported by air ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with serious injuries.

GONZALO was transported by ground ambulance to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston with minor injuries. After release from the hospital, OSP troopers took GONZALO into custody and lodged him in the Umatilla County Jail on the following charges:
  • Manslaughter in the First Degree
  • Criminally Negligent Homicide
  • Assault in the Second Degree
  • Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants
  • Reckless Driving

All three men were using safety restraints.

OSP troopers from the Pendleton Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Umatilla County District Attorney's Office.
