The Oregon State Police - Missing Children Clearinghouse will again be providing free Children Identification Kits, available in Spanish and English, during a four-day period at the 2008 Oregon State Fair, Sunday, August 24th, through Wednesday, August 27th, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. A 3'x8' banner will be displayed to help draw people to the free Children Identification Kits at the Oregon State Police display tent located near the amphitheater.

"These kits continue to be a wonderful proactive method to be prepared in case your child ever becomes missing," says Judy Hayes of the Oregon State Police - Missing Children Clearinghouse. "They are also a great way to help open up communication lines with your children regarding child safety."

This will be the first year the Oregon State Police - Missing Children Clearinghouse will distribute at the State Fair the newer ID Complete Child Identification and DNA kits that contain the cheek swab for DNA collection. The kits only take a few minutes to fill out and contain valuable information useful to police in the event that a child became missing.

In addition to the ID Complete kits, OSP temporary tattoos (OSP star/badge) will be handed out and a digital camera/portable printer will be on hand to take photographs to place in the kits. "Our children's look changes, so whether it is your first ID kit or not an updated photograph should be placed in the kit each year. Statistics have shown that one in six missing children are located or recovered because of a photograph," said Hayes.

The child ID Complete kits were purchased with money raised during the 10th Annual Oregon State Police Missing Children Golf Benefit held in Salem. This year $9,300 was raised to help buy 15,000 to 17,000 child ID kits.

Parents and families not attending the Oregon State Fair may obtain a child ID Complete kit from the Oregon State Police - Missing Children Clearinghouse at (503) 934-0188 or outside Salem at 1-800-282-7155 or e-mail judy.hayes@state.or.us. Please provide your name, address and call back phone number when making a request.
