A Metolius area man died Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 361 (Culver Highway) just south of Madras. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into the cause.
According to OSP Sergeant Don Wagner, on August 21, 2008 at approximately 4:40 p.m. a 1972 Chevrolet Nova two-door driven by DAVID MICHAEL ALLEN, age 61, from Metolius, was northbound on Highway 361 near Colfax road when he attempted to pass a gray Ford Ranger pick-up and crossed into the oncoming lane of travel losing control. The Chevrolet Nova collided with a 1997 Chevrolet pick-up driven by IMER GUTIERREZ, age 19, from Madras.
ALLEN was pronounced deceased at the scene.
GUTIERREZ and his 16-year old female passenger (name not available) suffered minor injuries. The passenger was transported to Mountain View Medical Center in Madras.
ALLEN was reportedly not wearing safety restraints. Both GUTIRREZ and his passenger were using safety restraints.
OSP troopers from Madras, Prineville and Bend Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and ODOT assisted at the scene.
A small section of Hwy 361 was closed for about 3 hours during the investigation.
