OSP Missing Children Clearinghouse Distributing Free Child ID Kits at Oregon State Fair
Ms. Judy Hayes
Missing Children Clearinghouse
Office: (503) 934-0188

For the second year, the Oregon State Police - Missing Children Clearinghouse will be handing out free Children Identification Kits, available in Spanish and English, during the 2009 Oregon State Fair. State Police employees will be providing the kit on three separate dates during the fair's run at the Oregon State Police table located near the amphitheater.
During last year's first handout of free Children Identification Kits, approximately 6,500 kits and 2,000 brochures were given out during a four day period. Over 1,000 children had pictures taken for inclusion in an ID kit.
"As of today there are approximately 1,325 people reported missing in Oregon. Of those, about 700 are under the age of 18, and over 95 percent of those juveniles are runaways," says Judy Hayes of the Oregon State Police Missing Children Clearinghouse. "These kits continue to be a wonderful proactive method to be prepared in case your child ever becomes missing, and they are also a great way to help open up communication lines with your children regarding child safety."
The newer ID Complete Child Identification and DNA kits to be handed out contain the cheek swab for DNA collection. The kits only take a few minutes to fill out and contain valuable information useful to police in the event that a child became missing. Photographs may also be taken at the fair free of charge and child safety kits will be available to pick up.
The free child ID Complete kits will be available at the display on the following dates and times:
* Tuesday, September 1st from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
* Thursday, September 3rd from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
* Saturday, September 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The child ID Complete kits were purchased with money raised during the 11th Annual Oregon State Police Missing Children Golf Benefit held in Salem last month. More than $14,000 was raised this year that will help buy 26,000 child ID kits.
Parents and families not attending the Oregon State Fair may obtain a child ID Complete kit from the Oregon State Police - Missing Children Clearinghouse at (503) 934-0188 or outside Salem at 1-800-282-7155 or e-mail child.idkits@state.or.us.  Please provide your name, address, number of kits needed and a call back phone number when making a request.
