Oregon State Police (OSP) Criminal Investigations Division detectives are continuing the investigation into the death of a woman whose remains were found Monday morning in a burnt motorhome east of Brookings. There is no evidence the death is the result of a crime and the cause of the fire is undetermined but does appear to be accidental. The woman has been tentatively identified and her name will be released in this update.

According to OSP Sergeant Teresa Bowersox, the victim is tentatively identified as ASHLEY ANNE KNAUS, age 21. She was living in the motorhome with her father who was not home at the time of the fire. Investigators believe the fire started some time between late Sunday night and early Monday morning.
On Monday, August 29, 2011 at approximately 8:30 a.m., a report was received regarding a motorhome heavily damaged by fire in a remote section along the Chetco River east of Brookings. OSP troopers, Brookings Fire Department, Brookings Police Department, and Curry County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and found the smoldering remains of a motorhome on state land near the 98000 block of N Bank Chetco River Road. Initial investigation confirmed the motorhome contained the remains of an unidentified person. A dog also was found deceased at the fire scene.

OSP detectives responded to lead the investigation and will continue to work with the State Medical Examiner's Office.

In addition to the above listed agencies, OSP is assisted in the fire investigation by the Office of State Fire Marshal.
