A California man died Sunday afternoon when he drove off Highway 101 about three miles north of Gardiner, struck a guardrail and then collided with a tree.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Ron Martin, on August 31, 2008 at approximately 3:15 p.m. a 2002 Nissan Sentra driven by LEONARD EUGENE OLSON JR., age 64, from San Rafael, California, was southbound on Highway 101 near milepost 206 when, for an unknown reason, it drove across the northbound lanes and struck the guardrail. Upon impact, the vehicle launched several feet into the air before striking a tree and coming to rest several feet off the east side of the highway down a steep embankment.
The operator was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
OSP troopers from Coos Bay and Florence offices responded to the scene as did deputies from Lane and Douglas County Sheriff Offices.
OSP was assisted on scene by Reedsport and Gardiner Fire Departments, Lower Umpqua Ambulance, ODOT and Mast Brothers Towing.
