A Waldport-area man died Sunday morning at a Portland hospital following a Friday afternoon two-vehicle crash on Highway 101 near Waldport. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers report the crash is alcohol-related on the victim's part.
According to OSP Lieutenant Kelly Collins, on August 29, 2008 at approximately 12 noon, a 1980 Mercedes Benz convertible driven by RANDY MARK TORRIS, age 56, from Waldport, was northbound on Highway 101 near milepost 152 negotiating a left curve when it crossed into the southbound lane and collided with the front of a 1996 Saturn two-door driven by MICHELLE OSTERHOUDT, age 39, from Yachats.
OSTERHOUDT was extricated from her car by local fire personnel. She was transported to Pacific Community Hospital by ground ambulance and then transferred by REACH air ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Hospital. She is in serious condition this morning.
TORRIS was also transported to Pacific Community Hospital and then transferred by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with critical injuries. He died Sunday morning, August 31st, at the hospital.
Both drivers were using safety restraints.
OSP troopers from the Newport Area Command office are completing the investigation with the assistance of the interagency Lincoln County Major Crash Team. ODOT assisted at the scene with traffic control.
Because this crash occurred prior to the start of the official Labor Day holiday period, this fatality will not be included in the holiday fatality total.
