A Brookings-area man died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver Wednesday night as he tried to cross Highway 101 just south of Brookings. The vehicle and driver have not been located and Oregon State Police (OSP) is asking for the public's help in this case.
According to OSP Sergeant Scott Punch, on September 3, 2008 at approximately 11:25 p.m. SAMUEL C. FARANDA, age 21, from Harbor, was attempting to walk west across Highway 101 just north of Benham Lane when he was struck by a southbound vehicle. After the collision the vehicle continued southbound without stopping.
FARANDA was transported by Cal-Or ambulance to Sutter Coast Hospital where he died early Thursday morning.
Witness statements and evidence at the scene indicates the vehicle was an unknown model white Ford sedan and it should have front end, hood and grill damage.
Anyone with information regarding this vehicle and its driver is asked to call OSP Southern Command Center dispatch at (541) 664-4600. Lead investigators are Sergeant Punch and Trooper Paul Rushton.
Curry County Sheriff's Office, Harbor Fire Department, and Cal-Or Ambulance / LifeFlight assisted at the scene.
