An Applegate–area man died early Saturday after losing control of his car and colliding with a tree along Highway 238 about six miles west of Jacksonville.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Mark Byrd, on September 6, 2008 at 12:10 a.m., OSP troopers and local emergency personnel responded to a crash on Highway 238 about six miles west of Jacksonville. Preliminary investigation indicates a 2001 Ford Mustang operated by MARK EUGENE WELCH, age 47, from Applegate, was westbound on Highway 238 negotiating a left hand curve. For unknown reasons the car went onto the north shoulder of the highway, over-corrected and drove off the south shoulder colliding into a tree.
WELCH was pronounced deceased at the scene. Safety restraint use information is not available.
OSP troopers from the Central Point Area Command office are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash.
Applegate Fire District #9, Jackson County Medical Examiner, Josephine County Sheriff Office, and Grants Pass Department of Public Safety assisted at the scene.
