Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers, with the assistance of Lane County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), are continuing the investigation into a late Saturday night fatal ATV crash in the South Jetty Dune Recreation Area south of Florence that resulted in the death of the 20-year old Eugene male operator and serious injury to the female passenger.
According to OSP Sergeant Mike Brewster, on September 5, 2009 at approximately 11:30 p.m. OSP was requested to respond to a US Forest Service area on the Goose Pasture Sand Flats in the South Jetty Dune Recreation Area regarding a fatal ATV crash. Preliminary investigation indicates a LCSO deputy was patrolling in the area in a 4x4 vehicle accompanied by a reserve deputy when he saw a 2008 Yamaha 700cc ATV with two occupants crash. The Yamaha ATV was reportedly operating past the 10:00 p.m. in the dark at a high rate of speed on the sand flats when it drove onto a sand berm and went airborne.
Both occupants were ejected and the male operator, identified as CASEY ALLEN RENFROE, age 20, from Eugene, was subsequently pronounced deceased. The female passenger, identified as TEYBRA JESSIE WELSH, age 18, from Veneta, was seriously injured and initially transported by Western Lane Ambulance to Peace Harbor Medical Center in Florence. She was later transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, and as of Sunday she was in serious but stable condition. Neither occupant was wearing a protective helmet.

RENFROE was camping in the area with other family members.

OSP troopers from the Florence work site are continuing the investigation.
