A renter at a Gates area house that was nearly destroyed by a fire August 30th was arrested by an Oregon State Police (OSP) Arson & Explosives detective Tuesday on an arson charge.
On September 7, 2010, OSP Detective Howard Greer arrested DANIEL TOBIAS McKINNEY, age 47, for one count of Arson in the First Degree, a Class A felony. The arrest followed an investigation by OSP Arson & Explosives Section, the Office of State Fire Marshal, Gates Rural Fire Department (GRFD), and Marion County Sheriff's Office into a structure fire on August 30, 2010 at 33639 Highway 22 near Maples Rest Area. The fire was reported at 6:26 p.m. and when GRFD firefighters arrived they encountered a structure with heavy fire and smoke. Firefighters from adjoining fire agencies assisted with suppression efforts. The fire was brought under control one hour later but the fire damage to the home is considered a total loss.
The investigation determined the fire was incendiary and intentional and identified McKINNEY, who had rented a room at the home for two months, as a suspect.
McKINNEY was arrested without incident and lodged in the Marion County Jail.
