Lieutenant Gregg Hastings
Public Information Officer
(503) 731-3020 ext. 247

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Sunday afternoon's fatal pedestrian-involved traffic crash that occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 in the Springfield/Eugene area. The incident was first reported as a subject jumping of an overpass but investigating troopers confirmed the deceased pedestrian jumped into the path of a commercial truck after walking into the northbound lanes.
According to OSP Trooper Cale Day, on September 11, 2011 at approximately 5:00 p.m. a commercial truck pulling a semi-trailer loaded with groceries was northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 192, a two lane construction work zone over the Willamette River. As the commercial truck was traveling in the right lane, the truck driver and witnesses said the pedestrian was seated on the median concrete divider before getting up and walking into the left northbound lane. The truck driver saw the pedestrian slowly walking into the left lane and moved as far right as he could before the pedestrian dove in front of the truck.
The adult male pedestrian identified as ANTHONY GLENN HOWARD, age 30, from Eugene, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The truck's driver, STEPHEN McDOWELL, age 53, from Perryville, Missouri, was not injured.
The northbound lanes were closed until 7:30 p.m. during the scene investigation.
OSP troopers from the Springfield Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Lane County Sheriff's Office, Springfield Police Department, local fire personnel, and ODOT assisted at the scene.
