OSP Roseburg Support Staffer Receives Vivian McLain Kirby Award
09/16/2009
Lieutenant Doug Ladd
Oregon State Police - Roseburg
(541) 440-3366

A long-time Oregon State Police (OSP) civilian support staff member was recently given an award for outstanding service at the OSP Foundation's "Superintendent Salute" event held late August at the Oregon Zoo in Portland.   Ms. Brenda Liles was presented the VIVIAN McLAIN KIRBY AWARD by OSP Superintendent Timothy McLain.  Ms. Liles started her service with the State of Oregon working for ODOT in 1972.  At the age of 21, she transferred to an entry level administrative assistant position with the Oregon State Police in 1975.  She is currently the head administrator at the OSP Roseburg Area Command office.   According to the citation submitted for this award:   "She is technically exceptional at her job. She knows everything a trooper or station commander may ask of her. If a sworn member is in need of information, she knows where to go to get it, or who to call to get it.  She is so familiar with the reporting system she has often brought errors to the attention of supervisors so they can be fixed prior to submission.

"On hundreds of occasions she has gone out of her way to assist people that have come to the office for assistance. She will spend as much time as is necessary to get people the information they need. She does so in a professional manner that makes people feel at ease despite the situation they may be in. Perhaps most important of all is the fact that she has acted far beyond her job description for her entire career. She has acted as confidant to station commanders and recruits alike. She has been the “mother hen” to countless numbers of officers over the years, acting as a sounding board when they are frustrated about something, and cheerleader when they are excited about something. She is the prime example of a dedicated, loyal, and hardworking behind the scenes employee. Without people like Brenda, the Oregon State Police is a lesser institution."

"She has saved me too many times to count," said her supervisor Lieutenant Doug Ladd.  "Many supervisors over the years owe good performance reviews to the diligence of Brenda."
The OREGON STATE POLICE VIVIAN Mc LAIN KIRBY AWARD recognizes management or represented employees who serve in a support staff role. This award is named after Vivian Kirby, one of the original support staff employees of the Department who served from August 1931 until her retirement in May 1970.   ### www.oregon.gov/OSP ###
