A La Grande-area man involved in a hit and run injury traffic crash Friday afternoon on southbound SE 82nd Avenue at the on-ramp to Interstate 205 was arrested by Oregon State Police after he was chased down by two U.S. Marines who witnessed the crash and saw the suspect try to flee on foot.

On September 17, 2010 at about 5:00 p.m. a two vehicle rear-end traffic crash occurred on southbound SE 82nd Avenue at the on-ramp to Interstate 205. The driver of a brown 1985 Subaru station wagon, later identified as CHRISTOPHER LEE COX, age 26, from La Grande, crashed into the back of a white 2002 Saturn station wagon driven by GEORGE L. HEITZ JR., age 52, from Woodburn.

COX got out of his vehicle and took off running. Two men, later identified as U.S. Marines in civilian clothes, saw COX run away and chased him down in a grassy area east of the crash scene where he was detained until Clackamas County deputies and OSP troopers arrived. Both men's names are not available for this release.

COX, who had a felony warrant for Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle, complained of pain and was transported by AMR ambulance to Kaiser Sunnyside Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. After he was released by doctors, OSP arrested and transported him to the Clackamas County Jail on the following charges:
  • DUII
  • Felony Hit & Run with Injury
  • Assault in the Fourth Degree
  • Recklessly Endangering Another Person
  • Warrant – Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle

HEITZ was transported by AMR ambulance to Providence Milwaukie Hospital with minor injuries.
