Salem Man Dies From Injuries Sustained in Sept. 11th Crash west of Salem

A Salem-area man died Saturday from injuries sustained during a September 11th traffic crash on Highway 22W at Doaks Ferry Road NW west of Salem.
 
On September 19, 2009, CHARLES K. BALHISER, age 87, from Salem, died at Salem Hospital where he was being treated for injuries. An Oregon State Police investigation indicates on September 11th at approximately 3:18 p.m. a 2005 Toyota Camry driven by BALHISER was eastbound on Highway 22W in the continuous left turn lane when it turned left toward Doaks Ferry Road NW and was struck in the passenger side by a westbound 2002 Ford Taurus driven by RACHELLE A. BOWEN, age 31, from Salem. A third vehicle driven by KARLA BETHEL, age 38, from Independence, was westbound behind BOWEN and collided into the rear of her car.
 
BALHISER was transported to Salem Hospital where he was treated until his death.
 
BOWEN and BETHEL were transported to Salem Hospital with minor injuries.
 
All three drivers were using safety restraints.
 
Oregon State Police troopers from the Salem Area Command office are completing the investigation.
 
Polk County Sheriff's Office, Salem Fire Department, Rural Metro Ambulance and ODOT assisted at the scene.
