A 59-year old Central Point man died Wednesday morning in a single vehicle fatal traffic crash on Highway 238 near Murphy. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Grants Pass work site are continuing the investigation.
On September 21, 2011 at approximately 5:56 a.m., Josephine County 9-1-1 received a call of a single vehicle traffic crash into a power pole on Highway 238 near New Hope Road. Upon arrival, two vehicle occupants had gotten out of the vehicle with minor injuries. Passenger HAROLD ROSS, age 59, from Central Point, was trapped inside and died at the scene.
Preliminary investigation indicates a 2007 Ford F550 utility truck driven by CRAIG CAMPBELL, age 35, from Grants Pass, was traveling southbound on Highway 238 near milepost 5 when he lost control. The vehicle traveled off the highway and struck a power pole. CAMPBELL told troopers he swerved to miss a deer that jumped out onto the road in front of his vehicle before losing control.
CAMPBELL and rear passenger KORY W. WOOLSEY, age 46, from Grants Pass, refused medical treatment.
The three men were in a vehicle registered to Rick Robertson Logging. None of the men were reportedly using safety restraints but the vehicle's front airbags deployed.
OSP was assisted at the scene by an off-duty Josephine County deputy, Rural Metro Fire, AMR ambulance, Pacific Power & Light, and ODOT.
