A Drain-area woman died Monday afternoon when the pickup she was driving was struck by an unloaded log truck as she attempted to pull onto Highway 42 about three miles south of Highway 101 in Coos County.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Recruit Tiffany Crutchfield, on September 22, 2008 at approximately 4:50 p.m. a 2002 GMC pickup driven by APRIEL JUNE PLUMLEE STEWART, age 61, from Drain, was stopped on Greenacres Road where it intersects with Highway 42 near milepost 3. As PLUMLEE STEWART entered from the north side of Highway 42 across the westbound lanes, she failed to yield and her pickup was struck in the driver's side by a 1988 Freightliner unloaded log truck driven by ALBERT CHARLES NASBY, age 66, from North Bend.
PLUMLEE STEWART was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was using safety restraints and her pickup's airbags deployed.
NASBY was using safety restraints and he was not injured.
OSP troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are completing the investigation. Coos County Sheriff's Office, Greenacres Rural Fire Protection District, Coos County Medical Examiner, Coos County District Attorney's Office, and ODOT assisted at the scene.
Highway 42 was restricted to one lane of traffic for approximately 2 1/2 hours.
