69-year old Tillamook-area man died Wednesday morning when this sport utility vehicle collided with a loaded log truck on Highway 101 about ten miles south of Tillamook.  The victim's name is released following next of kin notification who live out of state.

According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Senior Trooper Lane Hendrickson, on September 24, 2008 at approximately 6:25 a.m. a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer driven by JOHN EDWARD SHELLY, age 69, from Tillamook, was northbound on Highway 101 near milepost 77 when, for an unknown reason, it drifted to the right and struck the guardrail.  The vehicle then crossed over both traffic lanes, collided with the guardrail on the southbound side and drove into the path of a southbound 1988 Kenworth loaded log truck.

The log truck's driver, ROBERT C. SMITH, age 32, from Seaside, saw the oncoming Blazer, applied his brakes and attempted to drive to the left into the northbound lane in an effort to avoid the vehicle.  The truck's right front corner crashed into the front of the Blazer.

SHELLY, who was using safety restraints, was extricated from his vehicle by Tillamook and Nestucca Rural fire department personnel.  He was then being transported by Tillamook ambulance to Tillamook General Hospital when he was pronounced deceased while enroute.

OSP troopers from the Tillamook work site are continuing the investigation.  ODOT, Nestucca Rural Fire Department and Tillamook Fire Department assisted.
