Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish & Wildlife Division troopers, with the assistance of the OSP Criminal Investigations Division, concluded a metal theft-related investigation in Curry County that led to the arrest of a Gold Beach-area man on multiple charges. The investigation identified over $100,000 of heavy equipment allegedly cut up by the suspect for scrap metal.

On September 26, 2010, OSP Senior Trooper Brad Van Prooyen arrested STEVEN MATTHEW BARRETT, age 41, from Gold Beach, and lodged him in the Curry County Jail on the following charges:
  • Aggravated Theft in the First Degree (5 counts)
  • Criminal Mischief in the First Degree (5 counts)
  • Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree (4 counts)
  • Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree (11 counts)

OSP's investigation alleges between April 2010 and September 9, 2010, BARRETT cut up a D-6 Cat, a D-7 Cat, and a Log Loader for scrap metal. The heavy equipment was on private property belonging to a local citizen. During the same time period he scrapped out a motor home on private timber company property and stole metal components from an old mill located on Euchre Creek in Gold Beach.

Questions regarding this case should be directed to the Curry County District Attorney's Office.
