Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers arrested two men from the Portland and Vancouver areas last Thursday on numerous charges related to thefts from vehicles parked at trailheads in the Columbia River Gorge. The ongoing investigation in conjunction with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) has developed leads in several of their cases and linked one suspect to a related surveillance photograph.

On September 25, 2008 at approximately 7:45 a.m. OSP troopers and Hood River County Sheriff's Office deputies were conducting an interagency enhanced patrol effort along Interstate 84. OSP Senior Trooper Thad Routson stopped a vehicle operated by LASHAWN CALUMPIT, age 30, from Portland, for a traffic violation near Cascade Locks. During the stop, Senior Trooper Routson arrested CALUMPIT for Providing False Information to a Police Officer.

A search of the vehicle revealed several credit cards that did not belong to CALUMPIT. While Senior Trooper Routson continued his investigation, other troopers checked trailheads in the area and located a vehicle that had recently been broken into at Ainsworth State Park. The owners of the car, who were unaware that their car had been broken into, were contacted in the campground and confirmed the items found in CALUMPIT's vehicle belonged to them.

CALUMPIT and a passenger identified as KEVIN JACKSON, age 23, from Vancouver, Washington, were taken into custody and lodged at the Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facility (NORCOR) in The Dalles.

CALUMPIT was lodged for Furnishing False Information to a Police Officer, Theft by Possession in the Second Degree, Identity Theft, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Probation Violation.

JACKSON was lodged for Furnishing False Information to a Police Officer, Theft by Possession in the Second Degree, Identity Theft, and Fugitive from Justice related to a Clark County, Washington warrant.

On September 26th, Senior Trooper Routson saw a MCSO news release requesting help to identify a suspect in the theft from a motor vehicle in the Columbia River Gorge on September 15th in which several credit cards and a wedding ring were stolen. The news release provided a surveillance photograph of the suspect using a stolen credit card at a store in The Dalles.

Senior Trooper Routson noticed that the appearance of the suspect in the photograph was similar to CALUMPIT and contacted MCSO, who were able to provide additional information on their theft investigation that linked items found in CALUMPIT's vehicle to three more thefts in Multnomah County.

MCSO is continuing the investigation into the additional theft cases.
