A fugitive from Montana considered an escape risk if contacted by police was captured Friday afternoon in Troutdale after he fled in the vehicle he was driving from an Oregon State Police (OSP) traffic stop on Interstate 84. With the help of Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, and Troutdale and Fairview police the man was arrested as he tried to run from a truck stop to catch a Tri-met bus.
On October 10, 2008 at approximately 2:23 p.m. OSP Senior Trooper Ken Poggi stopped a vehicle westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 19 for a speed violation. The male operator, later identified as BRANDON CURRY, age 26, from Montana, initially stopped on the inside shoulder and when contacted advised he did not have any identification. The trooper was going to place him into custody for purposes of positively identifying him. As the driver was still inside his vehicle, a handcuff was placed on one wrist when he drove off at a high rate of speed dragging the trooper for a short distance until the trooper fell to the ground.
The car passed other vehicles on the inside westbound shoulder at a high rate of speed and took the Troutdale exit where he turned left going the wrong way on a one-way street. The trooper lost sight of the vehicle, but with the help of people in the area who pointed in the direction of travel the vehicle was found in an area apartment complex parking lot by other officers.
Information was developed indicating CURRY fled on foot and was at a Troutdale area truck stop. Officers drove there and spotted CURRY running toward a Tri-met bus where they took him into custody at 2:44 p.m. CURRY still had one handcuff attached to a wrist.
CURRY was positively identified through a photograph provided by Powell County Sheriff's Office in Montana where he is wanted on a nationwide felony warrant charging "Conditional Release Violation" based upon a recent burglary arrest.
CURRY is being lodged in the Multnomah County Jail as a Fugitive From Justice and local charges including Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle, Misdemeanor Attempt to Elude on Foot, Reckless Driving, Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, and Assaulting a Public Safety Officer. Additional charges may be added upon completion of the investigation.
The trooper received a minor hand injury when he fell to the ground at the initial stop location.
