Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Monday morning's single vehicle fatal traffic crash that resulted in the death of a Coos Bay man on Highway 101 just south of Coos Bay.
According to OSP Trooper Josh Young, on October 11, 2010 at approximately 11:50 a.m. a 1985 Pontiac Trans Am driven by BYRON WILLIAM MASSEY, age 43, from Coos Bay, was southbound in the left lane of Highway 101 near milepost 240 when it traveled through the center median and rolled onto its top. The Pontiac slid on its top uncontrolled across the two northbound lanes and down an embankment before coming to a stop between the northbound lanes and bordering railroad tracks.
MASSEY was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was using safety restraints. OSP was assisted by the Bay Area Emergency Chaplains service during next of kin notification.
OSP troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash. According to witness information, speed does not appear to have been a contributing factor.
ODOT, Millington Fire Department, Coos Bay Police Department, and Bay Cities Ambulance assisted at the scene. Traffic was detoured around the area for about three hours.
