Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers, with the assistance of the Lane County medical examiner, are continuing the investigation into the death of a Dexter man as he ran in the second annual Bristow Rock ‘N River Run cross country event Saturday morning at Elijah Bristow State Park in Dexter.
According to OSP Trooper Cale Day, on October 16, 2010 at approximately 11:19 a.m. JOSEPH STEPHEN BROOKS, age 47, from Dexter, was running with about 300 other runners during a 5K organized cross country run at the state park. Approximately two miles into the run he collapsed and was unresponsive. The race organizer was nearby and immediately was notified. Emergency medical personnel were called. The race organizer, along with two off-duty OSP troopers volunteering at the event and witnesses provided initial medical aid until Dexter and Lowell fire personnel and LifeFlight arrived. BROOKS was pronounced deceased shortly before noon.
BROOKS was reportedly an experienced runner and a volunteer firefighter with Dexter Fire Department for 3 years.
