Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Burns work site are continuing the investigation into Monday night's fatal traffic crash on Highway 20 about 31 miles east of Burns. An unidentified person was killed after their vehicle collided into the back of a disabled commercial truck and flatbed trailer. The victim's vehicle, the semi-trailer and load of bales of cardboard caught fire and were destroyed.

According to Sergeant Brian Williams, on October 17, 2011 at approximately 9:15 p.m. OSP troopers and local emergency personnel responded to a reported traffic crash on Highway 20 near milepost 163. The crash involved a passenger car and commercial truck pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with bales of cardboard. A fire ensued that was extinguished after fire personnel from Burns Fire Department, Hines Fire Department, and Burns Paiute Fire Department arrived.

Preliminary investigation indicates a commercial truck pulling the semi-trailer was driven by ALLAN D. McLAIN, age 57, from Hines, when it became disabled partially blocking the right westbound lane. At the scene, Highway 20 has two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane. Conditions were dry and there is no overhead road lighting.

After becoming disabled, other individuals arrived on scene and were attempting to repair the truck's mechanical problem when the trailer was struck from behind by a westbound passenger car. Immediately on impact, a fire quickly started and spread to the car, flatbed trailer and the load of cardboard bales. Attempts to stop the spread of flames with fire extinguishers were unsuccessful. The fire was later extinguished by responding fire personnel.

The driver of the car was found inside the burned vehicle deceased. The name and sex is withheld pending positive identification.

OSP is asking to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash or drove through the area prior to it happening who saw the stopped disabled truck and trailer. Anyone with information to help in this investigation is asked to call Senior Trooper Timothy Thomas at (541) 573-6132 ext. 26.

OSP troopers from the Burns work site are being assisted in this investigation by an OSP Collision Reconstructionist from the Ontario office. Harney County Sheriff's Office, ODOT, Burns Fire Department, Hines Fire Department, Burns Paiute Fire Department and Harney EMS assisted at the scene.
