Oregon State Police (OSP) are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Umatilla County District Attorney's Office into Sunday morning's quadruple fatal traffic crash and subsequent arrest of a Carlton-area man on Interstate 84 about ten miles east of Pendleton.
JOHN COLE CARLGREN, age 46, from Carlton, was arrested Sunday following the October 19, 2008 crash at approximately 12:19 a.m. westbound Interstate 84 near milepost 219. Three men and one woman were killed in the crash as they reportedly were returning to the Hermiston/Boardman area from La Grande where they attended a church sponsored dance. CARLGREN, who was returning home from Utah, remains in custody in Umatilla County Jail. (A photograph of CARLGREN is available with the first news release related to this investigation on our website)
According to the Umatilla County District Attorney's Office, an arraignment was scheduled for Monday, October 20th, at 1:15 p.m. in Umatilla County Circuit Court. The District Attorney's office has increased the initial charges to four counts of Manslaughter in the First Degree and one count of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants.
Preliminary investigation indicates on October 19, 2008 at approximately 12:19 a.m. a 1991 Chevrolet Beretta driven by JESSIE CLINE, age 29, from Hermiston, was westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 219 when it was struck from behind by a westbound 1999 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by JOHN COLE CARLGREN, age 46, from Carlton. The preliminary highway area of impact is on the right shoulder. After impact the Chevrolet traveled across the westbound lanes and came to rest on the left shoulder, and the Dodge pickup came to rest on the right shoulder.
CLINE and his three passengers were pronounced deceased at the scene. The passengers are identified as MICHELLE SAWYER, age 29, originally from the Lynnwood, Washington area and now living in the Hermiston area; WILLIAM JOHNSON, age 24, from Hermiston; and, FRED A. YOUNG JR., age 31, from Boardman. All four were using safety restraints.
CARLGREN was transported by Umatilla Tribal Fire & Ambulance to St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton where he was treated and released for minor injuries. Upon release, OSP troopers then arrested CARLGREN and lodged him in Umatilla County Jail. Safety restraint use information is to be determined in follow up investigation.
OSP troopers from the Pendleton Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Umatilla County District Attorney's Office.
