Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from The Dalles Area Command office are continuing the investigation into Wednesday morning's fatal traffic crash in The Dalles area related to the death of an adult male pedestrian struck by a commercial vehicle in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84.
According to OSP Trooper Mark Jubitz, on October 20, 2010 at approximately 5:25 a.m. a group of commercial trucks were traveling eastbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 83 when they came upon a male in the dark staggering down the middle of the two lanes. A couple of the trucks slowed and moved toward the shoulder to get around the man. A commercial truck driven by MARK L. GOSSON, age 52, from Wasco, slowed to approximately 25 mph into the left lane to avoid the man but as he passed, the man fell underneath the truck and was run over.
GEORGE ELMO BALZER, age 67, from The Dalles, was pronounced deceased at the scene. He resided about six blocks from the freeway and OSP troopers, with the help of the Wasco County Medical Examiner, are looking into a medical condition that may have been a factor affecting his behavior.
GOSSON was not injured. He was transporting garbage in a trailer for Walsh Trucking Company.
Wasco County Sheriff's Office, The Dalles Police Department, Mid-Columbia Fire & Rescue, and ODOT assisted at the scene. The eastbound lanes were closed about 2 1/2 hours with a detour established for traffic.
