Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers completed the scene investigation into Friday afternoon's single vehicle fatal crash that resulted in the death of a man on Highway 224 just east of Tong Road in the Carver area.
According to OSP Sergeant Dan Swift, on October 24, 2008 at approximately 4:00 p.m. a Ford Explorer driven by ROBERT WILLIAM O'BRIEN, age 33, from Estacada, was eastbound on Highway 224 near milepost 11 when, according to witnesses, it attempted to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone at the Tong Road intersection. Another vehicle was westbound and the victim's vehicle swerved to avoid it, losing control and hitting a power pole broadside before overturning onto its side and coming to a rest in a ditch on the westbound shoulder.
O'BRIEN was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was using safety restraints.
OSP troopers were assisted by Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Clackamas County Medical Examiner's Office and ODOT at the scene.
Highway 224 was closed in both directions until about 7:00 p.m. with a detour in place.
