Tillamook County DA Releases Name of Man Shot By Tillamook County Deputies
Tillamook County District Attorney William Porter has authorized the release of the name of a man who died after being shot by Tillamook County sheriff deputies Friday afternoon in Garibaldi.
The man is identified as MICHAEL ELMO SHEPHERD, age 68. SHEPHERD has no known address and next of kin were located and notified with the help of a chaplain in Clark County, Washington. No photograph available for this release.
The following is information was previously released by Tillamook County Sheriff's Office. No additional information is being released by Oregon State Police unless authorized.
On October 23, 2009, at about 12:42 p.m., Tillamook County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a call of a male subject breaking into a motor home at 303 6th Street, Garibaldi, Oregon.

Two Deputies arrived on the scene and contacted the suspect, who approached them with a raised hatchet. The suspect advanced and refused commands to stop, continuing toward the Deputies. The suspect was shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Deputies involved are on paid administrative leave, which is common practice in officer involved shootings.

The investigation is being conducted by the Tillamook County Major Crimes Team, which consists of the Tillamook Co. Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police, Tillamook Police Dept., Rockaway Beach Police Dept., Manzanita Dept. of Public Safety, and the Tillamook County District Attorney's Office.
