A Beaverton-area man died following a two-vehicle head-on crash Saturday afternoon on Highway 551 south of the Aurora Airport. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation.
According to OSP Recruit Kyle Olson, on November 1, 2008, at approximately 3:15 p.m. a Mitsubishi Galant driven by ANGELICA SANTOS, age 23, from Woodburn, was southbound on Highway 551 near milepost 3 when, according to witnesses, the vehicle drifted onto the gravel shoulder and over-corrected. The Mitsubishi veered into the northbound lane where it collided head-on with a 1997 Nissan pickup driven by GUSTAVO LOPEZ-GARCIA, age 39, from Beaverton. The Nissan came to a stop in a nearby field and the Mitsubishi came to a stop between the southbound and northbound lanes.
LOPEZ-GARCIA was taken by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital where he died from his injuries.
The Nissan's passenger, LUIS JAMES CARATACHEA GARCIA, age 36, from Beaverton, was taken by ambulance to OHSU with non-life threatening injuries.
SANTOS and her passenger, ROGELIO ROMAN MENDEZ, age 23, from Woodburn, did not require medical transport or treatment.
All involved occupants were using safety restraints.
OSP troopers from the Salem Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of OSP crash reconstructionists.  Aurora Fire Department and ODOT assisted at the scene.
Highway 551 was restricted to one lane until about 7:00 pm with a detour in place.
