Fatal Auto / Pedestrian Crash - Highway 42 west of Interstate 5

A 50-year old transient man died Sunday evening when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle as he walked across Highway 42 west of Interstate 5 near Winery Lane in Douglas County.
On November 2, 2008 at approximately 6:10 p.m. a 2003 Buick sport utility vehicle driven by J. ROBERT KAYSER, age 93, from Winston, was traveling in the right eastbound lane on Highway 42 near milepost 76 when the victim attempted to cross the highway from the north side to the south side.
The victim, identified as STEVEN MAHLON VULTAGGIO, age 50, with a last known address in Anderson, California, was struck near the middle of the right eastbound lane and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
OSP troopers from the Roseburg Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Douglas County medical examiner.
ODOT, Douglas County Fire District 2, and Winston Fire Department assisted at the scene. The right eastbound lane was closed about four hours.
