The booking photo of Robert Walker is being released.
The following additional details have been approved for release by the Coos County DA's office.
On Monday, 11-7-11, about 12:55 PM, Troopers from the OSP Coos Bay office responded to a reported auto vs. bicycle injury traffic collision on Hwy 101 near Mile Post 278 south of Bandon. Upon arrival, the troopers discovered they were dealing with a shooting and not a traffic collision. A preliminary investigation showed that Jeremy Platz, 40, of Bandon, was riding his bicycle south bound on Hwy 101 when he was confronted by Robert Walker, 70, of Bandon, who was driving past in a vehicle. Walker and Platz are known to each other and allegedly have a long simmering dispute stemming from marijuana issues. Walker allegedly fired at Platz from his vehicle, striking Platz at least once in the leg. Platz received initial medical treatment in the local area and was eventually transported to OHSU hospital in Portland for further treatment. He is reported to be in stable condition with a non-life threatening injury.
The Coos County Major Crimes Team was activated to investigate the shooting and Walker was arrested on charges of Assault in the First Degree (Assault I) and Attempted Murder. Walker was lodged in the Coos County Jail.
The Coos County Major Crimes Team consists of Detectives from multiple agencies within Coos County including OSP, the Coos County Sheriff's Dept., Coos Bay PD, Bandon PD, and North Bend PD as well as the Coos County District Attorney's office.
The investigation is still on-going and further information may be released at a later date.
OSP was assisted at the shooting scene by the Coos County Sheriff's Dept., Bandon Police, and Bay City Ambulance.
