Photo/sound file: http://www.flashalertnewswire.net/images/news/2011-11/1002/49242/IMAG0321.jpg Oregon State Police troopers from the Portland Area Command are continuing their investigation into yesterday afternoon's fatal traffic collision on Hwy 224 near Damascus.

About 3:30 PM on Wednesday, 11-9-11, OSP troopers and Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies responded to a reported two vehicle, head-on, traffic collision on SR 224 east of Tong Rd, near MP 11, in the Damascus area.

According to witnesses, a red, 1986, Volkswagen Scirocco was eastbound on SR 224 at a high rate of speed. The Volkswagen had just passed two vehicles over double yellow lines, and on a curve, when the driver lost control and the Volkswagen began to fishtail sideways. The Volkswagen slid sideways into the westbound lane where it was struck by a silver, 1989, Nissan pick-up being operated by Thomas Hickey Jr, 69, of Portland.

The driver of the Volkswagen was pronounced deceased at the scene. He has been identified as James Nelson,43, of Canby. Hickey Jr. was taken by AMR ambulance to OHSU hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

OSP was assisted at the scene by CCSO, Boring Fire, ODOT, and the Clackamas County Medical Examiner's office. Hwy 224 was closed in both directions for about three hours while the collision was investigated.
