A Silverton-area man died and two others were injured Saturday afternoon in a three vehicle fatal traffic crash on Highway 551 about one-half mile north of Arndt Road near Charbonneau. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation.
According to OSP Sergeant Bob Charpentier, on November 13, 2010 at approximately 12:50 p.m. a 2009 Ford F350 pickup driven by RICHARD HENKES, age 63, from Silverton, was southbound on Highway 551 when it drifted across the centerline into the northbound lane. A vehicle avoided the pickup but a northbound 2007 Peterbuilt dump truck collided head-on with the pickup. A 2001 Mercedes four-door following the pickup was involved in the collision and came to a stop off the west side of the highway. The Mercedes received minor damage.
HENKES was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was using safety restraints.
The Mercedes driver, LEONEL MARTINEZ, age 18, from Salem, was not injured. His passenger, MARIA U. PARDO-SOTO, age not available, received minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Oregon Health Sciences University.
The dump truck's driver, DARLENE C. SAMBUCETO, age 51, from Sherwood, was transported by ambulance to Meridian Park Hospital with minor injuries.
OSP troopers from Salem and Portland offices are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash.
Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Aurora Fire Department, ODOT and the Clackamas County Medical Examiner assisted at the scene.
