A Reedsport-area man died Tuesday morning in a single vehicle fatal traffic crash along Highway 101 just south of Reedsport. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
According to OSP Trooper Josh Young, on November 16, 2010 at approximately 7:49 a.m. two ODOT workers saw tire tracks in the gravel leading off the east side of Highway 101 near milepost 214. Upon checking the tire tracks they found a crashed vehicle down a steep embankment with a man laying in the vegetation near the vehicle. The man, identified as MARK A. JARRETT, age 44, from Reedsport, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Lower Umpqua Ambulance personnel.
Preliminary investigation indicates the 1979 Jeep CJ 4x4 driven by JARRETT was southbound on Highway 101 when, for an undetermined reason, it traveled across the northbound lane and off the highway. The Jeep continued about 70 feet down an embankment, went over a creek and came to rest on the opposite side of the creek. JARRETT was ejected and came to rest outside the vehicle. Initial observations are leading investigators to believe he was using safety restraints before ejection.
OSP troopers were assisted at the scene by Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Reedsport Police Department, Reedsport Fire Department and their High Angle Rescue team, and ODOT.
