A single vehicle roll over crash on Highway 97 approximately 9 miles north of Klamath Falls, Oregon claimed the life of a 47 year old man early Saturday morning.

On November 19, 2011 at approximately 1:30 AM, Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Pat Trippet was dispatched to the area of milepost 265, on US 97, to investigate a crash involving a pick-up that had slid off of the highway into an adjacent irrigation canal.  Road conditions were icy at the time of the crash.  The driver of the pick-up had been able to exit the vehicle and flag down a passing motorist for assistance.

While investigating the initial crash involving the pick-up, Sergeant Trippet discovered a grey 1991 Chevrolet Blazer, upside down, in the irrigation canal approximately 300 yards from the location of the original crash.  Evidence at the scene did not indicate that anyone had exited the Chevrolet Blazer after it had left the highway and rolled onto its top in the canal.  Personnel from Klamath County Fire District I and Klamath County Dive Rescue were notified and responded to the scene to assist.

Dive Rescue personnel found the operator, and lone occupant, of the grey Chevrolet Blazer, SCOTTIE LANE PECKHAM, age 47, of Klamath Falls deceased in the vehicle.  PECKHAM had been wearing a safety belt.

Troopers from the Klamath Falls Area Command are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash.  The troopers were assisted at the scene by Klamath County Fire District I, Klamath County Dive Rescue, and ODOT.
