Fatal Traffic Crash - Highway 26 between Prineville and Mitchell

A John Day man died Friday evening when he lost control of his vehicle on icy roads and collided with a pickup on Highway 26 about twenty-five miles east of Prineville.

According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Don Wagner, on November 20, 2009 at approximately 4:22 p.m. a 2004 Chevrolet utility vehicle driven by WAYNE L. ELLIOTT, age 55, from John Day, was westbound on Highway 26 near milepost 50 when he lost control on the icy roadway. The Chevrolet crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with an eastbound 1998 Dodge 3500 pickup pulling a utility trailer driven by ROBERT C. MAIR, age 68, from Mitchell. Both vehicles came to rest blocking the highway.

ELLIOTT was pronounced deceased at the scene.

MAIR was transported by air ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for injuries resulting from the crash. His condition is not available.

Both men were wearing safety restraints at the time of the crash.
OSP troopers from the Bend Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
Wheeler County Sheriff's Office, Crook County Sheriff's Office, Crook County Fire and Rescue personnel and ODOT assisted at the scene. Highway 26 was closed for about two hours at the crash scene.
