A 60-year old Milwaukie woman died Friday night while attempting to cross Highway 99E near Gladstone on foot and was struck by a van.
On November 27, 2009 at about 8:20 p.m. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers responded to a reported auto vs. pedestrian traffic collision on Highway 99E north of Meldrum Avene near Gladstone. The investigation showed that Maria Isabel Cervantes-Gutierrez, age 60, from Milwaukie, was crossing Highway 99E from east to west when she was struck by a Chevrolet Astrovan driven by Nathan Sheets, 24, of Milwaukie. Cervantes-Gutierrez was transported by AMR ambulance to OHSU hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
Based on evidence at the scene and witness statements, it appears Cervantes-Gutierrez was crossing the highway mid-block and was not in a crosswalk when she was struck.
Sheets stopped his van immediately and remained at the scene until police and medical personnel arrived and cooperated fully in the investigation. The southbound lanes of Highway 99E were closed for approximately two hours while troopers from the Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the collision.
No citations have been issued and the investigation is continuing.
OSP was assisted at the scene by the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Gladstone Police Department, Clackamas County Fire District #1, and ODOT.
