Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Monday morning's single vehicle rollover crash on Highway 97 south of Shaniko that resulted in the death of a 12-year old Umatilla girl and serious injuries to her grandfather.
On November 30, 2009 at approximately 8:00 a.m. a 1997 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by THEODORE J. TRAVIS, age 56, from Prineville, was southbound on a straight stretch of Highway 97 near milepost 63 when it traveled across the northbound lane and onto the shoulder. The pickup rolled before coming to rest on its top in the middle of the highway.
Passenger ARECELI TORRES-LOPEZ, age 12, from Umatilla, was ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene. Troopers advise she was using safety restraints and are continuing to investigate what factors contributed to her ejection.
TRAVIS was using safety restraints and was pinned in the overturned pickup. Maupin Ambulance responders worked for about 90 minutes to free him before he was transported by LifeFlight to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend with serious injuries.
OSP troopers from The Dalles Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
Wasco County Sheriff's Office and ODOT assisted at the scene. Highway 97 was closed for about 3 1/2 hours.
