Fatal Traffic Crash - Highway 30 east of Rainier

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Tuesday morning's two-vehicle fatal traffic crash on Highway 30 about three miles east of Rainier that resulted in the death of one person. Highway 30 was closed over five hours with periodic traffic allowed through one lane during the investigaton.
On November 30, 2010 at approximately 6:00 a.m. a 1989 Toyota 4Runner sport utility vehicle driven by LAWRENCE RAYMOND CURTIS, age 19, from Portland, was northbound on Highway 30 near milepost 43 when it drifted onto the shoulder. The driver over-corrected to the left into the southbound lane where it collided head-on with a 2000 Volvo Rail Vacuum truck. CURTIS was ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene. The truck's driver, JASON HARVEL, age 35, from Longview, Washington was not injured.
Investigators have not confirmed if CURTIS was using safety restraints.
HARVEL was using safety restraints. The vehicle he was operating is registered to Jammies Environmental out of Longview.
OSP troopers from the St. Helens office are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash. ODOT and Columbia River Fire & Rescue assisted at the scene.
