Nearly 20 area kids and their ‘Santa helpers' - Douglas County area law enforcement officers and Kmart associates – had their Saturday morning brightened during the area's annual "Shop with a Cop" event at the Roseburg Kmart store.
For over two hours Saturday morning, December 5, 2009, police officers from Oregon State Police (OSP), Roseburg Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Myrtle Creek Police Department, Sutherlin Police Department, and Winston Police Department helped the children shop for special gifts for the upcoming holiday season.

Douglas County Deputy Dwes Hutson said the children were paired with a law enforcement officer and given a $30.00 gift card to buy presents for their family. The officers helped the kids pick out and pay for the gifts before helping wrap them. Before leaving, each child was given their own stocking and a gift.

"These kids come from unique and at times difficult family situations, often only coming in contact with police officers in bad situations. Our goal is to let them know that we are there to help them in a positive environment. We want them to know we do care about them and think they are special," said OSP Sergeant Steve Mitchell.

All law enforcement agencies and participating officers expressed their sincerest appreciation to the Kmart associates who work very hard each year to make this event a success.
