Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers, with the assistance of Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, have identified the victim of a fatal traffic crash along Highway 101 south of Waldport as a local man who was reported missing Monday.
On December 14, 2010 at approximately 8:29 a.m. a report was received of a vehicle in a pond on the east side of Highway 101 just south of Waldport. Preliminary investigation indicates a blue 1993 Dodge Caravan driven by LEVINE RICHARD GULSVIG, age 82, from Waldport, was northbound on Highway 101 near milepost 157 when, for an unknown reason, it traveled off the east side of the highway. The van continued down an embankment about 30 feet off the highway and came to rest on its wheels partially submerged in a pond.
GULSVIG was pronounced deceased in the van. There is no indication at this time that he was using safety restraints but the van's airbags did deploy.
According to a Lincoln County Sheriff's Office news release, GULSVIG was reported missing Monday after leaving his home. It was believed that he may have been disoriented due to personal medical reasons.
OSP troopers from the Newport Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Yachats Fire & Rescue, Seal Rock Fire & Rescue, and ODOT assisted at the scene. One lane of Highway 101 was closed about two hours.
