A Gresham-area woman died late Friday afternoon when she was struck by a vehicle while walking onto Highway 224 as she talked on her cellphone in front of the Barton store in Clackamas County. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Portland Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
According to OSP Sergeant Walt Anderson, on December 24, 2010 at approximately 5:40 p.m. the victim, CHUN CHA SHIM, age 61, from Gresham, parked her vehicle in the Barton store parking lot along Highway 224 near SE Bakers Ferry Road. She got out of her vehicle, engine still running, and reportedly was talking on her cell phone to someone to get directions to where she was coming out to visit. She walked north onto the highway in the darkness and was struck by a westbound 2003 Chevrolet Suburban with four occupants.
SHIM was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Suburban's driver, JASON NELSON, age 40, from Eagle Creek, was not injured. The other three occupants were an adult female and two children.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Boring Fire Department, and ODOT. Highway 224 was closed at the crash scene for about three hours.
